In and Out

II Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come!

(ESV)

In and Out Burger Restaurant is one of my favorites.

But I am not here to talk about In and Out restaurant today.

…………………………………………………………………….

My sermon title is just only “In and Out”, not "In and Out Restaurant."

So please erase the restaurant image in your mind and try to keep only the word “In and Out” in your heart.

We are still surrounded by a lot of problems even though a new year has begun.

The new year is not new as we expect. People have said a lot of negative factors we may encounter through the years to come.

For instance,

-Overpopulation - too many people; no food, water, housing, etc.

-Global Economic Collapse

-Nuclear Proliferation, Specially the North Korea

-Pollution - environmental damages

-Global Warming - chlorofluorocarbons, etc.

-War - people killing each other for bad reasons

-Obesity/Disease - people dying from poor decisions or bad luck

-Habitat Destruction - people destroy nature to make room for more people

-Radical Islam/Terrorism

-Species Extinction - above practices causing diversity of life to diminish(*1)

In the middle of a kind of fear or uncertainty we are starting a new year of 2017.

But is there any hope or positive sign for us? Any solutions? Not easy to find it.

Although there is no way to change the world in a day or two, should we just watch what’s going on?

In fact, we have been struggling with all different kinds of problems from our birth.

Issue is this. Can we be happy and enjoy our lives despite those problems?  I would say, Yes.

There are three types of people in the world.

Those who are in the church,

Those who are out the church,

Those who are in and out the Church all the time.

There are three kinds of people in the church:

Those who are in Christ,

Those who are out Christ,

Those who are in and out Christ.

Which category are you belonging to now?

It is my prayer that all of us be in Christ. The first category.

Today’s scripture is a confession and affirmation of St. Paul’s faith in God and Christ since he had

encountered Christ Jesus on the road to Damascus.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

St. Paul declared, “I am in Christ and I am a new creation. The old has passed away; behold,

I am really a new being in Christ.” In other word, he said, “I am enjoying a new life no matter what the situation is.”

Let us focus the words, In and Out.

California winter is not that bad in terms of the weather.

I had been in the Mid-West for almost ten years, Iowa and Michigan.

Winter there is totally different from the San Francisco bay area.

Mid-West winter has a lot of snow and even a freezing rain time to time.

Too cold to be outside home for several minutes.

In a cold winter there feeling in and out a house is totally different.

1.     Inside the house with a burning fire place is comfortable and happy.

But outside the house in stormy snow is miserable.

In a cold winter night, you will be OK if you are in your house. No worry.

In general, inside gives us a feeling of something good.

But outside gives us a feeling of some troubles.

2.     Likewise, our life of faith out Christ or in and out Christ is a troublesome.

I wish all of us would be in Christ all the time until God calls us.

Why?

Because it is too good to be ignored.

Let me tell you some good things that we may get in Christ.

First of all, in Christ, you and I become a new creation.

And as a new creation, we will get many beautiful things and enjoy our lives.

a. In Christ we have rest.

Jesus told in Matthew 11:28

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

b. In Christ we have joy.

John 16:23-24

“In that day you will no longer ask Me anything. Truly, truly, I tell you,

whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.

Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive,

so that your joy may be complete.

c. In Christ we experience total healing: spiritual, mental and physical.

In 1957, at a mountain prayer meeting, I had experienced a total healing of spiritual, mental and

physical by the grace of God. Since then I have lived till now for 60 years.

Do you need help for your health, I recommend you to be in Christ who will give you a total

healing for you.

            Matthew 6:9-15; 26:28, Mark 11:25, Hebrew 10:17, Acts 3:19, I John 1:9, Ephesus 1:17,

Colossian 1:13-14

d. In Christ we find ourselves in peace.

John 14:27

”Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.

Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

            e. In Christ we are given forgiveness.  No more damnation nor critics.

            Mark 2:5,

            When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

            f. In Christ we receive salvation. And we have a real life, the eternal life with God.

            John 3:16, Acts 16:31

            g. In Christ we enjoy an abundant life. (John 10:10)

            j. In Christ we have freedom and satisfaction

If you out Christ you will lose all those good blessings.

Don’t be In and Out Christ either.

3.     Meaning of “In Christ”

ἐν Χριστῷ

Greek En has 5 meanings: In, On, At, By, With

            In Christ

            On Christ

            By Christ

            At Christ

            With Christ

All these five words have common ground of understanding which is “to get together and one.”

So, In Christ, we are to be one with Jesus in any circumstances.

            St Paul was one of the best samples who was in Christ.

            Let us listen to his word in Galatians 2:20;

I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body,

I live by faith in the Son of God (Jesus), who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

…………………………………………………………………

     It is the first day of the year 2017.

     It is my prayer for you and me to be in Christ throughout the year.

In the conclusion, I want to invite you to sing with me a gospel song, "In Christ Alone."

In Christ alone my hope is found;

He is my light, my strength, my song;

This cornerstone, this solid ground,

Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.

What heights of love, what depths of peace,

When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!

My comforter, my all in all—

Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,

Fullness of God in helpless babe!

This gift of love and righteousness,

Scorned by the ones He came to save.

Till on that cross as Jesus died,

The wrath of God was satisfied;

For ev’ry sin on Him was laid—

Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,

Light of the world by darkness slain;

Then bursting forth in glorious day,

Up from the grave He rose again!

And as He stands in victory,

Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me;

For I am His and He is mine—

Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death—

This is the pow’r of Christ in me;

From life’s first cry to final breath,

Jesus commands my destiny.

No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man,

Can ever pluck me from His hand;

Till He returns or calls me home—

Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.
